Appleby is on the world famous Settle to Carlisle Railway line. The line, which passes through some spectacular countryside, features famous steam locomotives and the world famous Ribblehead Viaduct (as travelled over by the ‘Hogwarts Express’ in the Harry Potter movies).
The line had been terminating at Appleby since the December 2015 floods as there was a major landslip between Appleby and Carlisle. But at the end of March 2017, the line re-opened and the world’s most famous locomotive, The Flying Scotsman, travelled through Appleby to mark the line’s re-opening.
Appleby station is a thing of beauty. Largely unchanged and unspoilt since the early 1930’s and is preserved to a very high standard and is a charming reminder of the great age of steam on the railways.
Number 48 is a ten minute (mostly downhill) walk from the station. By prior arrangement, it may sometimes be possible for us to pick guests up from the station.
